open a terminal,

#grub-install /dev/sda

sda shuold be the hard disk that you need to install the boot menu.

#cd /

and give the command, grub

#grub

then type find /boot/grub/stage1

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

then it will show something like hda(1,7), you might not get the same hda(1,7) it should differ from the partition you have selected to install Linux. so 1,7 are like variables. hda(x,y) x=hard disk and y=partition of the hard disk. 1 means that this is in the second hard disk of my computer. so if you have selected the first hard disk, or have only one hard diskthis x=0 (zero).

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd1,7)

grub>

then, to install the grub use the command setup,

grub> setup (hd1)

this 1 shoud be equal to the “x” as I mentioned above.

now exit from the grub. (Ctrl + C),

So Its done, but make sure you still can boot windows if you want. if you dont need windows you don’t need the rest.

Open menu.lst

#vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

and check if you can find some ting like,

title windows
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

[this (hd0,0) is the place where we have windows. in my case first hard disk, first partition.]

if you cannot find some thing like this you need to add this accordingly.

• vi /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

then find the folowing stanza,

• AllowRootLogin=false

and change it to “true”, so it will be “AllowRootLogin=true”

to find that,

type – “vi /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc”
then type- “/AllowRootLogin”
then type- “a”
then move your mouse to “=” sign and delete “false” and type “true”
then type “:wq” and press Enter key.
DONE

you might need to restart the computer

In Fedora,

/etc/pam.d/gdm
and comment the following line.
auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

vi /etc/pam.d/gdm
#auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

and save.

now enjoy your ride to the PC with no restrictions!!!

usually no need of restarting the computer, but might need.

or else you can mount the destination PC/Server on your Linux.

use “mount” to do so.

mount.cifs //<name of shared folder*> /mnt/windowsfs -o user=,password= port=5000

to copy files,
cp /home/amila/myfile /mnt/windowsfs/fromLinux/

for more about mount files/partitions read the below section
if you need to mount a disk partition like C:\ or D:\ use “c$” or “d$” instead of “name of shared folder*”

If you need to do windows to linux,
easiest is to use winSCP or filezilla with sftp (port22)

ex;
I want to copy the file myfile in /home/amila/
so I’ll do scp,

scp /home/amila/myfile root@12.127.16.67:/root

scp /home/amila/myfile root@12.127.16.67:/root
source file destination user account destination IP Destination path

username = amila
password = amila123

So,
to mount this partition in linux, we need to open a shell prompt and then give this command.
(I’m going to mount this E:\ drive in /mnt/windowssvr/e, so before you give the command remember to create a folder )

“mount.cifs //192.168.1.2/e$ /mnt/windowssvr/e -o port=5000,username=amila,password=amila123″

if you think you need to make this share available when you switched on the computer, you can copy this command and paste it in
/etc/rc.local
